Laura Del Col Brown

I was pushed to “be a writer” for as long as I can remember. At least one close relative still identifies me to others as “a writer,” despite my never having earned a living or identified myself that way. I enjoy writing, but no more than I enjoy beekeeping or watching sumo.

I only submit my work to paying publications, which are ever fewer, and lately I can't be bothered to track them down. This site includes a mixture of previously published and new work.

My surname is Brown. Del Col is my maiden name, and comes from the Friuli–Venezia Giulia region of Italy. My pronouns are she/her.

I grew up in West Virginia, but have lived in northwest London since 2000. I became a British citizen in 2009 and renounced U.S. citizenship in 2023.

The Bad Shodo Diaries

New for 2026, a series of short essays very loosely based on Japanese kanji.

My life as a sinister obsessive trans rights activist

Read this if you've heard about me through Mumsnet and Mr Mueller (Leonard Cohen would never).
